Are you ready to make a scientific breakthrough in one of the biggest research facilities in the world?

Diamond the Game Print and Play is a board game you can print at home, for 2-5 players that lasts between 20-30 minutes. It puts you and your family and friends directly in the role as a researcher at the Diamond Light Source, visiting different beamlines to make progress in a diverse range of scientific projects in Physics, Chemistry, Cultural Heritage, and more. As you travel around the synchrotron you will have to make the most of your experiments, as well as working with your fellow players, in order to be remembered as the most famous scientist!

"In my other career as a materials scientist I often performed experiments at the Diamond Light Source, a major facility in the UK. Two scientists from Diamond reached out to see if I wanted to join them to design a game aimed at students to educate them as to what actually happens at Diamond, and generally what it is like to work there. I’m really pleased with what we came up with in the end, especially as a game that really puts its participants in the shoes of real scientists and helps them realise that failure is a normal part of doing cutting-edge research. The pandemic meant that we needed to change plans from manufacturing actual games to providing the game as a free downloadable print and play - hopefully in the future we can still make the physical product to send out to schools!"
